Let's Get Fired Up

Okay, I know I said I would write about my first day of work as soon as I got home yesterday, but I was just too tired lol. Anyways, I loved my first day of work as a Sales and Marketing Executive. My co-workers are extremely helpful, and my manager is amazing at what she does. She really knows her stuff! I love when people know their field inside and out. It shows that they really care. If you're not going to do something to the best of your ability then don't bother doing it all. I love my work and I feel really positive that it's going to stay that way for a long time (I also love working in walking distance of 10 coffee houses and little shoppes and pubs)

Enough about my job. Now, today I had a very strange experience. I got a call from my dad around lunchtime (12:30pm), saying that my sister had answered a call that came into our house from the hospital that said that I needed to go straight to the hospital or county health department to get a Tetanus shot. We didn't know why, but when a nurse from the hospital calls and tells you that you are sick, you just listen to them ya know. So I go tell my boss what's going on, and I leave to head over to the county health department in the next town over.

They're closed when I get there. So, then I drive over to my doctor (my doctor's office is only about 3 minutes away from the health department) to see if I can get a shot there. I tell one of the medical assistants who works in the office what's going on (that I got a call from the hospital saying that I needed to go and get a Tetanus shot immediately), and she gives me a shock when she tells me that doesn't make any sense. See, I had just gone to my doctor and had my 6 month check-up this past Tuesday. They drew blood then also. She's like, "How would the hospital know that you need a Tetanus shot when we are your doctor, and we don't send our samples to the hospital for testing? Did you go to the hospital between Tuesday when we saw you and today??" I replied NO.

She goes and asks the doctor did he know anything about the situation, and he says no. He then walks out of his office and tells me, "I have the results back from the blood I drew from you two days ago; there's nothing in there that would warrant a Tetanus shot. You're fine." Well, by now I'm pissed off because I've left my new job to go on a wild goose chase it seems, so I'm going to get to the bottom of this one way or another. They both tell me that maybe I should call the hospital and see what they're talking about, because there has obviously been an error made somewhere.

Believe me, they didn't need to tell me anything. I was definitely going to call the hospital. So I called the hospital and spoke with 4 separate departments (the lab, the outpatient care center, records, and the general diagnostics), none of them had me on file for any blood testing since 2008 (and even then, I didn't test positive for Tetanus), called me, or even knew what in the hell I was talking about.

I wasn't so mad anymore as I was befuddled. Bewildered is an understatement. I then call my sister and tell her to read off the number from the caller id. She did and I called it. Well, it came back to a specific doctor that I hadn't been a patient of since I was 2 years old. Wtf?! And, how did his office get my home phone number?? We've changed it a thousand times since then.

Well, by this time it was time for me to get back to work. I told myself I would try to hash it out after I got off from work this afternoon. To make a long story short. I got home and called the number that showed up on the caller id. I was finally able to get in touch with the doctor and tell him about the mysterious call I had received.

He explained to me that it was all a glitch and that I had been called by accident. That message was meant for one of his patients who apparently had a pretty fierce run-in with a barbed wire fence. He figured that when he gave the nurse the social security number of the patient so she could look up their information, she must have put it into the computer incorrectly, and it bought up my name and info (from when I went to the hospital two years prior).

And his office is now located within the hospital, which is why the caller id said Florida Hospital. He was also very grateful that I had gone through all the trouble to get to the bottom of the situation, because since I got that message, it means that the patient it was meant for didn't. So he had to hurry and call them so they could go get a Tetanus shot from the hospital or urgent care. And that my friends, is why it's so crucial that people in the healthcare profession make as few mistakes as possible.

The most important points of this very long twisting story are: I ended the day happy and healthy just like I had started it, and that I probably helped save someone's life by being persistent:)

God Bless,
Gabby
