Lucky Dog

I am so happy. Last night 2 cute little dogs came to our house and were barking outside at like 2 AM. Me and my father went around the neighborhood at like 2:15AM trying to find their owners. We went to every house we knew owned dogs. Most people didn't open their doors (In today's world you can't really blame them though. I am just happy that no one came to the door aiming a shot gun. I do live in the deep South and I am African American-nuff said). Anyways, after driving around to different houses for forty-five minutes we finally just brought the puppies, who one had fallen asleep on my lap and the other one on the back seat of my car, back to our house. They jumped out the car and were playing in the yard.

We left them outside and went back in the house to try and get some sleep (by this time it was past 3AM), hoping that the dogs would wander back to their house. No such luck lol. After about 25 minutes they came back up to the front door and started barking and crying. After 10 minutes me and my father went back out there and gave them some hamburger patties left over from that night's dinner and water hoping that if we feed them they would at least curl up and go to sleep by the porch. We didn't want them to wake the whole neighborhood or have our old bugger neighbors complain.

They ate the food, drank some water and then came up to the big window on the left side of our home and started to cry and whine. My dad then called his deputy sheriff friend to come and pick up the dogs and take them down to the police station where my daddy works and keep them there until the shelters open up at 8AM. We didn't want the dogs to get hit by a car (We live by a fairly busy highway that a lot of semis use to get to Jacksonville) or eaten by an alligator (We also live by a big lake. It has rained so much here in the past few weeks that the water levels have risen dramatically and made alligators more mobile. We find them in peoples' pools and back yards all the time).

Anyways, the dogs are now in the shelter and if no one claims them by Friday they are ours! Our friends at the animal shelter seem to think that the dogs were dropped off in our neighborhood by their owners who couldn't take care of them anymore due to the economy. They said that has been happening a lot lately. We live in a pretty nice area. It consists of middle and upper class families. The dogs are extremely well groomed and have shiny fur so I know these were definitely not strays. I could never just drop any of my pets off and leave them to fend for themselves. My pets are like family to me! They are like little people for crying out loud.

My parents are letting me keep the dogs if no one claims them (even though our home is already like a barn because of me), because we are an animal-loving family and my mother said she couldn't bear the thought of those cute little dogs being put to sleep just because they couldn't be found a home. Unfortunately, animal shelters here and all around the country are putting perfectly good animals down because the shelters are overcrowded and can't afford to keep the all animals until someone adopts them. That makes me so sad. Animals are amazing. They do only what nature mandates of them through their instincts. I especially love domestic animals. Pets love anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sex, sexual orientation, class, job, social standing, etc. As my friend The Count said, "Animals just know affection without all the extra stuff."

I have my fingers crossed that no one claims them and that they will become mine:)

Gabby
